Recreational weed use got the green light in Missouri after Amendment 3 passed in November 2022! Folks 21 and older can now buy, possess, and enjoy marijuana.

Article XIV of the Missouri Constitution imposes a 4% tax on retail marijuana sales for medical use at dispensaries statewide. Additionally, a 6% tax is levied on marijuana sales for adult use at dispensaries in the state.

Obtaining a Medical Marijuana Card in Missouri

Here’s a quick guide to getting your medical card in Missouri:

1. Complete the Forms:
   • Physician Certification: Have your doctor complete this form.
   • Extra Certification: Needed if you require more than 6 ounces per month.
   • Consent Form: Required for minors, completed by a parent/guardian.
   • Caregiver Authorization: Caregivers need this form and the patient’s ID number.
2. Register Online:
   • Sign up on the Missouri DHSS secure portal (caregivers must register, too).
3. Submit Your Application:
   • Start a new application in the portal as a “New Patient” or “New Caregiver.”
   • Applications are online only.

Renewal:

• You’ll receive email reminders before your ID card expires.
• Renew 60 to 30 days before expiration to ensure timely processing.

What Missouri Patients Should Know

Medical marijuana patients can purchase up to 6 ounces of cannabis per 30-day revolving period (this means that 30 days from the day of purchase, it then falls off of your allotment) and are subject to a 4% state tax on medical cannabis purchases. Patients should be mindful of the restrictions on public consumption, which apply to both medical and recreational users. Patients and caregivers can cultivate marijuana with an approved cultivation identification card, allowing them to be in possession of up to a 90-day supply of dried, unprocessed marijuana or its equivalent stored in an approved, enclosed, locked facility.

• Adults aged 21 and older can legally possess up to 3 ounces of dried marijuana or its equivalent.
• A consumer may purchase up to 3 ounces in a single transaction.
• Various forms of marijuana are legal, including flower, edibles, concentrates, vapes, pre-rolls, topicals, and tinctures​.
